Friday, April 15,9-11AM
Gadsden Public Library, Lena Martin Room
Speaker: Katie Busch, Director, Alabama Hands-On Science Activity Program (ALAHASP) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham
Join UAB Labworks Program Director Katie Busch from 9-10A. ALLA’s annual transition ceremony will take place immediately following, from 10-11AM.
The new science standards will be implemented in the 2016-17 school year, which include an emphasis on engineering and a call to educators to develop 21st-century skills in our students. Join UAB’s Alabama Hands-On Science Activity Program director Katie Busch for an exciting hour exploring how to bring stories to life using innovative technology and engineering. In this session, participants will experience many approaches to engaging children and supporting educators in literature-based STEM activities including augmented reality, invent-to-learn, and storybook engineering. Ms. Busch will discuss the partnership developed between the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Gadsden Public Library to make the library a hub for STEM education in the local community. Participants will try out innovative technologies, complete an engineering challenge, and learn how to develop engineering activities from favorite children’s books.
