FROM THE PRESIDENT
WELCOME MEMBERS, PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS
Dear friends and colleagues,
From the white sand beaches of Gulf Shores to the foothills of Fort Payne, Alabama libraries play an integral part in the fabric of our state. This organization, the Alabama Library Association, represents and supports all of our libraries and the librarians and paraprofessionals in them.
The sights and sounds of Alabama libraries weave a rich tapestry of life throughout our great state -- Gleeful sounds of children exploring far-off lands through stories of dragons and knights; hushed voices of students preparing for exams; the excited buzz of lectures and public events bringing people from all walks of life together -- this is what libraries represent today. Exploration. Scholarship. Community.
From an early age, I knew I was destined to become a librarian. The ability to explore places I'd never been opened a new world of possibilities for me. I solved the Mystery of the Green Ghost with the Three Investigators, stood beneath Juliet’s balcony on a warm summer’s evening, and recovered treasure from Spanish galleons sunk long ago. I've passed that passion on to my own children who, I hope, will do the same for theirs.
Henry Ward Beecher said that "a library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life." I could not agree more wholeheartedly. I hope you’ll take this year to explore the library, learn something new, and be a part of your community.
